‘They’ll be after his head’ – Danny Rohl given Rangers reality check pre-Celtic

Danny Rohl has been given a big warning ahead of Rangers’ Old Firm derby clash with Celtic.

Rohl was announced as Rangers boss earlier this month, following a long recruitment process which involved a number of rejections.

Since his arrival, the German has secured two wins from two in the Scottish Premiership, firing the Gers up to third in the table.

However, Rangers are still 11 points adrift of table-topping Hearts, and face a big challenge to claw themselves back into the title race.

Danny Rohl faces danger in Old Firm derby

Rangers face Celtic in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday (2 November), at what is the semi-final stage of the competition.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the outcome of the Old Firm derby will have a big impact on the way Rohl is received by Gers supporters.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the Rangers fans will be after his head if their side lose 5-0 to Celtic.

However, Wyness added that it will be “dead easy” for Rohl if he manages to guide his team to victory.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Danny Rohl’s is probably lucky to come in at the right time. He’s going to be given a chance.

“Results will dictate, but I think that Rohl has got more of a chance than anybody to try and settle down. He has made a decent start in terms of communication.

“But still we’ve got the Old Firm game coming up at the weekend, so we’ll see how that goes for Danny Rohl and Martin O’Neill. You never thought you’d be saying that two weeks ago.

“I think Rohl’s going to get a bit of a chance. If he wins the Old Firm game, it’ll be dead easy. If he loses 5-0, the fans will be after his head again. So I’m afraid it all comes down to Rangers and Celtic and those Old Firm games.

“People try and say it isn’t, but I’m afraid there is still chronic short-termism in terms of Scottish football for those two clubs.”

Rangers eye stadium redevelopment

Rangers’ owners are looking to boost the club’s matchday revenue as they consider adding more seats at Ibrox, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking at the club’s General Meeting in June, vice-chairman Paraag Marathe revealed Rangers will explore plans for a stadium expansion.

Rangers’ Fan Advisory Board (FAB) provided an update on the situation following discussions with the club’s hierarchy last week.

The FAB revealed the club’s preferred option for a stadium expansion would be to lower the level of the pitch and add a further 4,000 seats at Ibrox.
