‘They’ll end up signing him’ – Man United to ‘cave in’ on Benjamin Sesko deal

Manchester United are likely to “cave in” on signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer.

The Slovenia international has been linked with several top clubs following his impressive campaign in the Bundesliga.

The 22-year-old, who is under contract until 2029, registered 21 goals and six assists in 45 appearances last season.

Newcastle United are pushing hard to sign Sesko as they look to find a potential replacement for Alexander Isak, who has emerged as a target for Liverpool.

Eddie Howe’s side have made an improved offer worth a fixed £69.5million fee for the striker after their initial £65.3million bid plus £4.4million in add-ons was rejected.

Sky Sports reported on Monday (4 August) Man United are now expected to make a formal offer for Sesko.

The Leipzig star is believed to be leaning towards a move to Old Trafford despite being open to joining both clubs this summer.

Man United plan to sell stars after Benjamin Sesko deal

This article contains exclusive comment from Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.

Man United are planning to sell Rasmus Hojlund if they can sign a new forward this summer, with Sesko now emerging at the top of their list.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider before the latest Newcastle offer, Borson said: “Newcastle now are going to be in a position where because they’ve missed out on so many players, are they going to be pressured into overpaying or overpromising for a player like Sesko?

“It’s going to be interesting to see. It’s almost impossible to know whether it’s a good price or not.

“If he works, you’ve got a striker for 10 years, and if he fails, then it’s just another £65million down the tube.

“What could United get for Hojlund? Maybe half the money back, and that’s the nature of these transfers.

“I don’t think the fee itself is going to put anybody off.

“I think it’s more United will just be looking at it and going can we sell before we buy ideally and, if not, then are we prepared to invest another £65million, with maybe £30million down, and the wages are obviously going to be significant for this player.

“So, it becomes a financial decision.

“I would think United probably end up with him and kind of just cave in timing-wise, just taking the decision to buy him and hoping that they can sell towards the end of the window.”

Ruben Amorim has changed his mind on Kobbie Mainoo transfer

In terms of other transfer activity at Old Trafford, Football Insider revealed on 3 August Kobbie Mainoo is likely to stay at Man United despite interest from the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham.

Ruben Amorim was not initially convinced by the England international, but he’s been won over by his performances in training and now values him as a key member of his squad.

The 20-year-old endured an injury-hit 2024-25 season, where he registered just two goals and one assist in 37 appearances.
