Danny Mills has hailed the ambition of Danny Mills after they followed up their club-record signing with the capture of “big talent” Matt Targett.
The Midlands giants announced earlier this week they had signed Targett from Southampton for £11million rising to a potential £17million.
The left-back, 23, will link up at the newly-promoted Premier League club with fellow new arrival Wesley Moraes, who signed from Club Brugge last month for a Villa-high £22million.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England right-back is convinced that Targett can make a big impact at Villa Park but warned that big spending alone cannot guarantee top results.
“They’re really going for it at Villa,” Mills told Football Insider. “Targett was behind Ryan Bertrand at Southampton but he’s a Champions League winner and an England player.
“Targett would have decided he wanted first-team football and he has the ability to play regularly at Premier League level. He’s a big talent and will benefit from working at Villa with an experienced coach in Dean Smith and a former defender in John Terry.
“But you have to be careful if you buy too many players, just having good players doesn’t mean you have the best team.
“It’s about gelling the players together and making sure they hit it off. Just adding quality doesn’t necessarily mean you will get a good team.”
Targett played second fiddle to Bertrand at Southampton last season, making 13 Premier League starts among 21 appearances in all competitions.
The Saints academy product has moved away from St Mary’s Stadium before, and spent the second half of the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Fulham.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club have made a move to sign a newly-available Premier League striker with great scoring record.
