‘Thinks he’s Neymar’ – Fans blast ‘useless’ Aston Villa man vs Newcastle United
Aston Villa supporters swarmed onto social media to rip apart one of their own players after a goalless draw against Newcastle United.
Ezri Konsa was given his marching orders after dragging Anthony Gordon down on the counter-attack, but it was not the England international who was at the centre of abuse and insults at Villa Park.
It was an extremely frustrating encounter with the Magpies, having not managed a single shot during the first half, and even after a couple of chances in the second 45 minutes, nobody could break the deadlock.
Arne Slot was slammed for his experiment with Wataru Endo against Bournemouth on Friday, 15 August, and now, it is Unai Emery who finds himself being bombarded by fans on social media after the 0-0 draw.
John McGinn slammed after Aston Villa deadlock
The one player who received most of the backlash was club captain John McGinn.
Football Insider revealed last month that Everton had made a move for McGinn, with David Moyes a big fan of the player, but it appears that Emery has no plans to let go of the Scot this summer.
Mainly due to Villa’s financial struggles, making key additions in the summer transfer market has not been a possibility for the Villans, forcing Emery to place McGinn on the wing instead.
He barely made an impact at Villa Park, touching the ball 34 times and only attempting 19 passes [FotMob] before he was eventually taken off after Villa’s red card.
Unai Emery in desperate need of additions
It was a tough afternoon for all involved at Villa Park, even for some of Newcastle’s brightest stars, but it was McGinn who took the brunt of criticism as the team limped away from Villa Park.
One supporter called the midfielder’s performance a “shocker”, while another accused him of “thinking he’s Neymar“, attempting to go around several players before losing possession.
He has been a key member of the squad over the last few seasons, making almost 300 appearances for the Villans since his move from Hibernian in 2018, but this was far from one of his best.
