This is how much Celtic have to pay Wilfried Nancy for sacking him

Wilfried Nancy has faced a challenging start to life as the new Celtic manager following his appointment earlier this month.

The French boss joined Celtic on a two-and-half-year contract from Columbus Crew after spending three successful years with the MLS club.

Nancy faced sack calls from Celtic fans after losing all four of his opening games in charge of the Scottish champions.

However, Celtic beat Aberdeen 3-1 on Sunday (21 December), with goals from Benjamin Nygren, Kieran Tierney and James Forrest earning Nancy his first victory since making the move to Parkhead.

While that win has eased some of the pressure on the Hoops manager, he will be expected to put together a strong run over the coming weeks.

Wilfried Nancy’s potential Celtic compensation details revealed

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Celtic would likely have to pay Nancy one year’s salary if they decide to part ways with him in the near future.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (20 December) Nancy had to secure a victory over Aberdeen to avoid being sacked following his disappointing start in Scotland.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the compensation Nancy would be owed, Borson said: “It won’t be zero. I mean, he’s left a job, so I think you can look at the minimum being probably one-year money, given that he’s left a job that presumably he was happy with to come to Celtic.

“This isn’t a contract that’s got a probation clause in it, where they can get rid of him with no compensation in the first six months.”

Nancy arrived at Celtic with a solid reputation following his work at Columbus Crew, where he won the MLS Cup and Leagues Cup.

Celtic didn’t factor early exit into Nancy’s contract

Borson insisted Celtic’s hierarchy wouldn’t have been thinking about compensation packages when they appointed Nancy.

“I think the idea that he would be under pressure after a few games would not have been on the radar when signing him,” said Borson.

“You don’t bring in a new guy believing there’s any possibility that after this many games you might need to do something. So, I think if they wanted to get rid of him, you can expect it to cost them one year’s salary.”

Celtic, who sit six points behind league leaders Hearts, are set to take on Livingston in their next fixture on Saturday (27 December).
