This may be real reason for Lampard U-turn at Everton after latest report – pundit

Kevin Phillips has suggested Everton may have changed their mind on appointing Vitor Pereira due to fan pressure.

The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Toffees hierarchy may have “learned” their lesson after the acrimonious departure of Rafa Benitez earlier this month.

According to the Telegraph (28 January), Frank Lampard has been offered the chance to become the new manager of Everton after “impressing” during his second interview on Thursday (27 January).

The report claims Pereira and current caretaker Duncan Ferguson were also frontrunners for the vacancy before Farhad Moshiri decided to offer Lampard the job.

Pereira, who took part in a live Sky Sports News interview discussing the role on Wednesday (26 January), had emerged as the preferred option this week.

However, Moshiri reportedly turned attention to Lampard following a hostile reaction from Everton supporters.

Phillips insisted the board were correct to “listen to the fans”.

“The Pereira interview was interesting,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He said he’s won titles and he felt like he can do the job. Every manager would say that to try and secure the Everton job, a top job at a big football club.

“You have to listen to the fans. They made a big mistake with the appointment of Rafa Benitez and didn’t listen to the supporters.

“They were obviously looking at his track record. He’s a fantastic manager who has achieved a lot – but most people knew that it was never going to work.

“The board have learned from that experience and are now willing to listen to the fans and take on board their suggestions.

This Lampard appointment is an example of that – it was critical they got it right.”
