This unsung Leeds hero should have been named in the Championship Team of the Season

COMMENT by Amir Mir

While the hard-hitting Pontus Jansson has won plaudits in defence and striker Chris Wood has constantly produced the goals up top for Leeds, goalkeeper Rob Green has gone unnoticed.

This was proven when Wood and Jansson were named in the Championship Team of the Season on Monday.

Former England international Green was overlooked with Brighton’s David Stockdale getting the nod ahead of the experienced campaigner.

Stockdale has had a solid season for his club, but he has not played in front of a newly formed defence or a team not expected to push for promotion this season.

Stockdale has instead played in front of a defensive backline that has been producing the goods for a number of seasons but has not been able to cross the line.

By contrast, Green’s calmness, leadership, decision-making, and experience has helped the Whites produce magnificent defensive displays this season.

This was proven during the club’s 2-0 win against automatic chasers Brighton on Saturday evening.

Green pulled off some vital saves and made a number of good decisions when commanding his area – he has been doing this throughout the season.

There is no doubt that he has been an unsung hero for Garry Monk’s side this term and if they do earn promotion to the Premier League then he will have to play a vital part in their survival.
