Thomas Partey destroyed vs Tottenham: Ferdinand and McCoist blast Arsenal man

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey faced major criticism for what he did in the first half against Tottenham, from Rio Ferdinand and Ally McCoist.

The Gunners fell behind to a Heung-Min Son opener, but it was Partey’s lack of urgency prior to that which caught the attention of the TNT Sports co-commentators in the 24th minute.

Prior to Son’s goal, Partey was described as “not good” for failing to close down the space as Pape Matar Sarr surged through the midfield unopposed.

Ferdinand criticised the Ghanaian, saying: “Partey didn’t want any part of that running against Sarr there. You’ve got to get across; your holding midfielder’s got to get across there and slow that down.”

McCoist echoed the sentiment, adding: “That’s not good. Look, that is not good. You’re right—he should be breaking his neck to get in that gap between the left-back and the left centre-back.”

Ferdinand concluded, agreeing with McCoist: “100 per cent, Al.”

The Gunners struck back with a quick double before the break to lead 2-1 after a Dominic Solanke own goal and a Leandro Trossard strike.

Mikel Arteta is unlikely to be pleased with Partey when he reviews that replay, even though Arsenal went into halftime leading 2-1.

Despite the club’s decision reportedly allowing him to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season, the Gunners continue to depend on the 31-year-old midfielder.

Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a deal for Martin Zubimendi.

However, Arsenal appear to have a contingency plan in place, with reports suggesting a deal for Martin Zubimendi is close to being finalised—a move that has delighted fans.

However, the reported deal for Zubimendi is set for the summer, while immediate issues persist. The North London side are currently grappling with injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, prompting fans to urge the club to prioritise signing a forward.

Allowing Partey to leave could free up significant wages for such an attacking signing, but with no immediate solution in sight, this uncertainty may leave fans feeling uneasy.
