Thomas Tuchel faces Jack Grealish conundrum if Everton star earns England recall

England manager Thomas Tuchel could face a tricky dilemma if he decides to call Jack Grealish back into the squad.

Grealish has not been named in Tuchel’s latest England squad, and first of the season, since his swich from Manchester City to Everton in the summer.

The 29-year-old has had a fine start to life on Merseyside, with four assists in three Premier League games, helping Everton to victories over Brighton and Wolves.

England face Andorra and Serbia in crucial World Cup qualification matches, and Grealish has now not been called up to the national team since October 2024.

Jack Grealish faces competition for England place

Tuchel has decided to call up players like Marcus Rashford, on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, over Grealish for this squad.

BBC Sport‘s reporter Sami Mokbel [3 September] believes Tuchel could have an “issue” with Grealish returning to the squad due to the plethora of attacking options at his disposal ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

He states that Tuchel “views Grealish as a central attacker of which the German has options – Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham among others.”

However, Tuchel “won’t be able to ignore Grealish,” if his fine start to the season continues throughout the campaign.

Football Insider Verdict

Tuchel has so far not called up Grealish for an England squad under his watch, but that stance will have to change if his form continues.

Grealish was not wanted at Man City under Guardiola last season, and he has been revitalised with a fresh start at Everton.

With the World Cup less than a year away, Tuchel will be closely assessing his options, which he has many in attacking areas.

If not seen as a left winger by Tuchel, Grealish faces stern competition for a place in the central role, with Bellingham especially unlikely to be dropped.

Grealish though could force himself into Tuchel’s plans if he continues to show the dazzling creativity and flair that he is currently producing at Everton.
