Three positions Liverpool must strengthen during January window

By Emma Sanders

Football Insider assesses three areas Liverpool should look to invest in to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.

Attacking midfielder

Liverpool are one of the best attacking sides in the Premier League and Adam Lallana has been in excellent form in an advanced central midfield role. However, his absences in the draws against Manchester United and Southampton highlighted the Reds’ need for a back-up when he is not in the side. Georginio Wijnaldum is a fine player but he doesn’t possess the mobility and technical excellence of Lallana. Philippe Coutinho is the only other player in the squad who has played regularly in that role in the past but he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up what looked like a serious injury during the 2-0 victory against Sunderland. Klopp may need to bring in somebody else as cover for his injured stars.

There were strident calls for Klopp to bring in a left-back in the summer to replace Alberto Moreno but he proved everyone wrong when he thrust James Milner into the position. The shock move has paid dividends. The vice-captain has been excellent since making the switch from midfield and has firmly cemented his role in the starting line-up. Joe Gomez’ return promises to provide further options in defence but it may be sensible for Klopp to bring in another left-back as squad cover. The prospect of Moreno being the only back-up should fill everyone of a Liverpool persuasion with dread.

The Reds are still missing a prolific goalscorer and have relied on the trio of Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane to bring in the bulk of goals this season. Liverpool could be without two of those for a long period of time, with Coutinho picking up an injury on Saturday and Mane expected to join the Senegal squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Moreover, Daniel Sturridge is yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League and a mobile front man with an eye for goal could be the one player they need to catapult the side to the title.

In other Liverpool news, Bayern Munich are lining up a move for this senior star at Anfield.
