Axe first team mainstay: Three reasons Jonjo Shelvey should start v Brighton
Reliance on Ritchie
So far this season, nearly all of Newcastle’s goals have come thanks to one man; Matt Ritchie.
No, the Scotland international is not on a red hot goal scoring streak – he is yet to find the back of the net this season – but has been providing the assists for his team mates.
The 28-year-old has set up four of his side’s six goals this season, from both set pieces and from open play.
However, a reliance on Ritchie could prove detrimental, especially with the winger already two bookings away from suspension, and the Magpies need another creator of chances in their side.
Step forward Jonjo Shelvey, whose passing ability could offer the cutting edge from the middle of the park, instead of out on the flanks where Ritchie resides.
While Brighton will know all about the central midfielder from their matches in the Championship, if Shelvey is on form, there is little they will be able to do.
