Three reasons why Liverpool should go all-out to sign 25-year-old PL ace
COMMENT By Matt Bullin
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp should do whatever is necessary to ensure Virgil van Dijk comes to Anfield this summer.
The £50million rated Southampton defender is set to be the subject of a huge bidding war as Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool have all shown interest in acquiring his services.
The 25-year-old has made 30 league and cup appearances for the Saints this term and has proven his worth in the Premier League.
Here are three reasons why Liverpool should do anything it takes to sign him in the summer.
A statement of intent

If Jurgen Klopp does get his man it would be a huge signal of intent to their top four and title rivals. If van Dijk signs for Liverpool, they will have had to have spent big to beat off the likes of Arsenal and Everton, and with big money comes a big expectation. A £50million price tag will put pressure on van Dijk to perform, but realistically if Liverpool want to return to the glory days then they need to invest big. Signing van Dijk could be the first signal that the Reds are ready to return to the summit of English football.
Time on his side
The 12-time Netherlands international is only 25-years-old – arguably the perfect age to make his move to a big club. He still has time to grow and improve as a player, but he is experienced and has a number of seasons in senior football under his belt. Liverpool’s best centre back Joel Matip is also aged 25 – if the pair could avoid injuries it is feasible that they could become the Reds first choice centre back partnership for the next four or five years.
The Southampton connection
If Klopp does complete the signing of van Dijk he will be the sixth player to make the St Marys to Anfield switch since 2014. Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and Rickie Lambert have all made the move up north and some have had stuning success. Liverpool have already handed the Saints £91million for five of their stars – so what difference does another £50milllion make?
