Three reasons why Tottenham should perform u-turn and sign this 27-year-old PL ace

COMMENT By Matt Bullin

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino should beat off interest from Everton and make Swansea star Gylfi Sigurdsson his priority signing this summer.

The Daily Express reported that Everton are set to offer the Icelandic midfielder £140,000 per week in order to tempt him to Goodison Park.

Sigurdsson played for Tottenham for two seasons between 2012 and 2014, and the 27-year-old made 83 league and cup appearances for them.

Here’s three reasons why Spurs should perform a u-turn and beat Everton to the signing of the 49-time Icelandic international.

Sigurdsson still has quality

The attacking midfielder has been the shining light in a dark season for the Swans. He has eight goals and 11 assists in 33 Premier League games this term and has been their most consistent performer by some distance. Those numbers prove he still has the quality to perform at the top level in the Premier League and he could more than do a fill-in job for Spurs.

Spurs need squad depth

After a hugely disappointing campaign in Europe this season, Pochettino will be looking to improve his squad in all areas this summer, so he can effectively rotate his squad in the Champions League next term. Sigurdsson would be the perfect rotation option for Christian Eriksen because the two are so similar in style.

Unfinished business

Arguably a poor second half of the season in 2014 cost Sigurdsson his Spurs career as he was subsequently shipped off to the Liberty Stadium in the summer. But in the 2012/13 season he had been a regular starter for Tottenham, and since then his performances and numbers for Swansea have improved vastly. He is ready for another chance at a top-six club in the Premier League and why not prove some of his doubters wrong while he is at it?

In other Tottenham news, Pochettino made Wanyama the player he is today according to his brother.
