Three senior Celtic players that could leave Celtic in January

COMMENT By Will Butcher

Brendan Rodgers is expected to add to the Celtic squad in January after making six signings in the summer.

But with a first-team squad that already consists of 29 players, the former Liverpool boss is likely to offload a number of his senior stars before delving into the January market.

Here are three senior players that Rodgers could push towards the exit door:

Nadir Ciftci

The Turkish midfielder has endured a nightmare stay at Celtic Park since his move from Dundee United in July 2015.

Just 11 starts in almost 18 months has seen the talented attacker’s career begin to stagnate under Rodgers, after making just two appearances in the Hoops’ Champions League qualifiers this term.

With three years still remaining on his contract, Rodgers could look to sell the former Portsmouth ace to bring in some cash that he can reinvest.

Ciftci is still likely to interest a number of teams from the Scottish Premiership, after scoring 25 goals in 61 league starts for Dundee United.

Efe Ambrose

Like Ciftci, Celtic’s number four has featured just twice in the cup this season and is likely to be moved on in January with his contract set to end in the summer.

The signing of Kolo Toure ended Ambrose’s Celtic career, with Jozo Simunovic, Erik Sviatchenko and Eoghan O’Connell considered ahead of the Nigerian international in the defensive pecking order.

A number of European sides were reportedly keen on the 28-year-old in the summer, with the likes of Olympiakos, Werder Bremen and Schalke potentially set to reignite their interest in just over a month’s time.

Kris Commons

The former Derby and Nottingham Forest star has failed to feature for Rodgers this term, as Tom Rogic occupies the number 10 role.

With a superb goalscoring rate during his time with the Hoops, Commons is likely to attract interest from his home country as his contract draws to a close.

Championship experience could also be used to his advantage, after scoring more than 50 goals in England’s second tier. Likely to be available in a cut-price deal, a move for Commons is also likely.

In other Celtic transfer news, Leeds should look to sign this Celtic star.
