£95,000-a-wk player must be binned: Three things learned about Tottenham in win v Newcastle

Tottenham narrowly earned themselves a spot in next season’s Champions League by winning 1-0 against Newcastle United at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Harry Kane’s 50th minute goal was enough to secure all three points for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who confirmed their top-four spot as Chelsea failed to beat Huddersfield at Stamford Bridge.

In a frustrating midweek fixture, Pochettino was forced into a number of changes due to injury and illness, but the inclusion of Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama in the deep-lying midfield positions had a serious impact on the way the side played.

Spurs failed to get their usual stranglehold on the game and really suffered when they had to try and push Newcastle back into their own half.

The Magpies made the most of this and had a number of chances to break the deadlock themselves before Kane’s goal five minutes after the break made them pay for squandering opportunities.
