27-year-old will never be good enough: Three things we learned about Liverpool in win v Stoke

COMMENT By Harvey Byrne

Football Insider analyses three talking points from Liverpool’s 4-1 win against Stoke in the Premier League.

Dejan Lovren will never be good enough to play for Liverpool

The 27-year-old centre-back was considered a big signing after moving from Southampton to Anfield in a £20million deal in 2014. However, after starring for the Saints he has struggled at Liverpool with a number of errors and he could have done a lot better for the first goal conceded on Tuesday. The defender was weak in the air, allowing Jonathan Walters a comfortable header. Lovren will never be good enough to play for a team like the Reds, who have title aspirations and Jurgen Klopp must invest in a new centre-back in the winter window.

Joe Allen should not have been sold

The Wales international gave another classy performance this season and this time it was against his former side. The 26-year-old did not put a foot wrong in the clash at Anfield and was a thorn to his former side. Allen has certainly showed that he is a better player than what he was at the Reds and that he’s vastly superior to £23million summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum in the middle of the park. Allen, 26, also still has a large number of years left in him and the Reds should not have moved so hastily to get rid of him after a good Euro 2016 tournament.

Adam Lallana is only getting better

The 28-year-old has come on leaps this season under manager Jurgen Klopp and he doesn’t look to be stopping. The attacker scored another goal against Stoke on Tuesday, marking his seventh goal in 17 fixtures from his midfield position. Lallana was previously thought of as not good enough for Liverpool, but this season he has been key to the Reds’ strong standing in the league table. He has previously progressed through England’s football leagues with Southampton and he now looks to be getting better with Liverpool.
