Newcastle United stunned Manchester United at St James’ Park to pull off a 1-0 win on Sunday.
The Magpies started the day in the bottom three after results across the top flight went against them, and faced the daunting prospect of coming up against the side sitting second in the table, who had thrashed them 4-1 at Old Trafford earlier in the season.
However, after a goalless first half in which both goalkeepers were tested, it was Rafael Benitez’s side who drew first blood, with winger Matt Ritchie netting his first goal of the season with a drilled finish after a knock down in the box.
The backline were tested throughout but stood resilient to the visitors’ threat, and the roof was lifted by the Toon Army at full time after an enthralling clash.
