Newcastle United left it late to secure victory over basement club Crystal Palace with a 1-0 win at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Mikel Merino’s 84th minute header, his first goal for the club since joining from Borussia Dortmund, was enough to sink the Eagles and give Newcastle their first win in four matches.
Despite the difference in league position, with Newcastle sitting in ninth in comparison to Palace’s 20th place, the two sides looked evenly matched as they both failed to impress in the north east.
It was a match lacking in quality and goal scoring chances were at a premium, but it was Matt Ritchie’s delivery from a corner which allowed the Spanish midfielder to net and lift St James’ Park after a turgid afternoon.
So what can fans take away about the Magpies from their late win?
