No Ritchie, no party: Three things we learned from Newcastle v Brighton

COMMENT by Russell Edge

Newcastle United’s three match winning run was halted by Brighton as the Seagulls secured a narrow 1-0 victory at home on Sunday.

The Magpies had hoped to return to the heady heights of fourth with a win but instead find themselves in ninth after the weekend’s fixtures.

Benitez kept faith in the same starting XI which had seen off Stoke at St James’ Park, but they were unable to offer enough of a threat to the Brighton defence

Instead it was the Seagulls’ summer signing Tomer Hemed who notched the all important match winning strike in the second half, capitalising from some disappointing Newcastle defending to fire past Rob Elliot.

For fans of the south coast club, the victory may have made up for Newcastle’s two wins in their Championship clashes last season.
