Three words from Eric Dier sum up Tottenham chances of beating Chelsea to title after shattering blow
By Harry Sykes
Eric Dier admitted that “it’s nearly impossible” for Tottenham to win the league after their crushing defeat to West Ham on Friday night.
Dier delivered his verdict on Spurs’ chances of preventing Chelsea romping to the title in the immediate aftermath of the 1-0 defeat to the Hammers at London Stadium.
The Hammers guaranteed their Premier League survival with a landmark victory that handed Chelsea a huge advantage in the title race while appearing to deliver a killer bow to the hopes of Tottenham.
The game was settled by a Manuel Lanzini goal after 65 minutes, with a below-par Spurs unable to mount any consistent goal threat despite having a full-strength side available for selection and the momentum of a nine-match winning streak heading into Friday’s encounter.
Asked about Spurs’ title chances, Dier told Sky Sports 1’s live coverage of the match. “It’s nearly impossible.

“It was already going to be hard and now it’s even harder. It’s disappointing. We were on a fantastic run.
“They made it very hard for us, they played very deep and we didn’t create enough chances.
“We managed to bring it back to four points, but we will give it everything for the last three games.”
Spurs, who have all but secured second position in the league table, remain four points adrift of Chelsea with just three matches of their campaign remaining.
Antonio Conte’s team need just two wins from their last four games, starting with Monday’s home clash against Middlesbrough, to ensure they will win the title.
They could have the club’s second league crown in three years wrapped up by next Friday if they follow a victory against struggling Boro with a triumph against West Brom at the Hawthorns.
Nevertheless, Tottenham appear to have second place sewn up as they are eight points clear of third-placed Liverpool, with both teams having played 35 matches.
