Tim Sherwood: John Terry won't be feeling this if he moves to Aston Villa

By Amir Mir

Tim Sherwood believes Chelsea defender John Terry won’t be feeling like he is going to a “smaller club” if he makes a switch to the Championship side this summer.

Recent reports in the media have stated that the 36-year-old, who will be a free agent at the end of this month, could be heading to the Midlands when his contract expires.

BBC Sports have claimed that Villa don’t expect progress in the Terry situation until next week after they offered the highly-experienced man a contract.

Former Villa boss Sherwood has backed the former England captain to move to Villa because the Championship side needs someone of his calibre in the dressing room.

“I think it’s a good move for John and a good move for Villa,” Sherwood told Sky Sports’ transfer blog on Friday morning (11: 29am).

“John’s an excellent professional, not only in what he gives you on the pitch but also what he’s going to give you around the dressing room. He will make other players around him better.

“They need some leaders there and there’s no bigger leader than John Terry. Every club needs those sorts of characters and certainly a huge club like Villa with the fan base they’ve got. John won’t feel like he’s going to a smaller club.”

Centre-back Terry recently lifted his fifth Premier League crown when Antonio Conte’s side won the league title by winning 30 of their 38 matches.

Nonetheless, if Terry were to move to Villa then he will face a different proposition to the one he has been used to in recent years.

Villa are managed by former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce, who has been set the minimum task of helping the club earn promotion next season.

During their previous transfer windows, Villa have spent heavily on players and ahead of the forthcoming campaign, they are favourites to make a return to the Premier League.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, this is why the club should make a move for this reportedly midfielder available from their Championship rivals.
