Tim Sherwood says Liverpool player had ‘worst game you can ever imagine’ vs Southampton
Liverpool’s progression to the next round of the Carabao Cup did not come without its critics of star players.
The Reds defeated Championship side Southampton 2-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and substitute Hugo Ekitike, who was instantly shown a second yellow card for removing his shirt late on.
Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle in a British record transfer fee of £125million, and was restored to the starting XI after Hugo Ekitike was preferred against Everton.
Liverpool have a perfect record this season, having won all their opening five Premier League games and having beat Atletico Madrid in their first Champions League match.

Jeremie Frimpong slammed for Liverpool performance vs Southampton
Arne Slot made 11 changes for the visit of Southampton, but the side still had more than enough quality to win the match.
The likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones all started alongside Isak.
Frimpong, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, was deemed to be having a horror performance by Tim Sherwood.
Speaking on Sky Sports, [23 September], Sherwood said: “Frimpong is having the worst game you can ever imagine.
“We have barely seen Isak. The midfield has been non-existent.
“Liverpool can’t get any control.”
The Reds were fortunate not to go behind before Isak’s goal as Adam Armstrong hit the bar before Leo Scienza headed wide the rebound and 36 seconds later the ball was in the back of the Saints net.
Conor Bradley pushing Frimpong for right-back spot
Frimpong was supposed to come in and take Trent Alexander-Arnold’s place at right-back with limited competition.
However, form and injuries mean Conor Bradley has been given opportunities to impress Slot recently.
Jeremie Frimpong | Stats |
Appearances | 190 |
Goals | 30 |
Assists | 44 |
Like on the other left flank between Milos Kerkez and Robertson it does not seem clear whose Slot number one choice is in the position.
Frimpong’s poor showing against Southampton will not have done his chances for a start against Crystal Palace any favours.
