Kevin Phillips predicts a “low on confidence” Sunderland side to taste defeat at Lincoln City on Saturday.
However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner claimed a result in the East Midlands could spark a revival at the Stadium of Light.
In Lee Johnson’s first game in charge the Black Cats dropped to ninth in League One and eight points adrift of the automatic promotion spots with a 1-0 loss at home to Wigan.
An EFL Trophy win away at Oldham Athletic has lifted spirits on Wearside but Saturday’s trip to second-in-the-table Lincoln promises to be a much sterner test.
Phillips is hopeful Johnson has enough time with his players this week to inspire significant improvement on the pitch.
“It is going to be a very tough game against a Lincoln side that are flying at the moment,” he told Football Insider.
“To be honest, I do not see them getting anything out of the game. It will be a really tough.
“I expected the players to respond straight away to Johnson’s appointment against a Wigan side who were bottom of the league, but there was nothing.
“Yes, they got a result during the week but it was a game you expected them to win.
“Lincoln City are a different proposition and I cannot see Sunderland getting anything. They are low on confidence and Lincoln are in form.
“If they were to get a result it could be the start of a revival. Lee Johnson will hopefully spark something this week but I cannot see them getting a result.”
