‘Todd Boehly could quit as yet another Chelsea controversy sparked’

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly could be set to quit one of his roles after yet another controversy has emerged.

The American billionaire has come under fire for some of his decisions since taking over the club alongside Clearlake Capital in May 2022.

Chelsea have spent around £1.5billion on new signings over the past three years.

Enzo Maresca’s side secured their return to the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League table in the 2024-25 season, while they also won the Conference League last month.

The London giants’ latest accounts for 2023-24 showed their overall revenue fell from £513million to £469million.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for 2023-24.

Chelsea fans rage after payment revealed

Boehly’s involvement in Vivid Seats has caused unrest among Chelsea supporters.

The club’s chairman is a director of the American site, which facilitates the resale of Premier League match tickets at up to £20,000.

In an open letter sent to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters in March, the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust asked the league to “act and investigate” Boehly’s involvement in the company.

Chelsea’s latest accounts revealed Vivid Seats made a £93,000 payment to the club that was listed under “transactions with related parties”.

The platform is listed as an “unauthorised ticket seller” by the Premier League.

Premier League sends letter after Chelsea controversy

The Mail reported on 22 June the Premier League has entered into talks with Chelsea amid Boehly’s controversial ownership of Vivid Seats.

Speaking at a Football Supporters’ Association event last week, Masters revealed the Premier League has written to the club to seek clarification on their position with ticket resellers.

While stepping away from an investment is no doubt a difficult decision, Boehly quitting his position as a director with Vivid Seats seems like the easiest way to bring the matter to a close.

It’s just negative PR for the owners at a time when they are looking to push forward and build on the club’s successful end to the latest campaign.

However, Boehly and the rest of the Chelsea hierarchy have shown they have plenty of tricks up their sleeves since taking over at Stamford Bridge, so perhaps they have other ideas in mind.
