Todd Boehly told to scrap controversial new Chelsea plans after latest twist – pundit

Noel Whelan has told Todd Boehly to scrap plans to establish a multi-club network and focus on “getting Chelsea back where they belong”.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 49-year-old has a “lot to learn” about the English game after attempting to introduce a Premier League All-Star game.

According to The Guardian (29 September), Chelsea owner Boehly has seen attempts to buy historic giants Olympique Lyonnais of France and Santos of Brazil fail as he attempts to establish a multi-club network.

The Daily Mail claim (29 September) the Blues chief has now entered negotiations for Portuguese side Portimonense and is eyeing further partnerships in Belgium, Brazil, and France.

Boehly moved quickly to sack Thomas Tuchel earlier this month, replacing the German with Graham Potter.

The American is also searching for a sporting director after taking charge of the Stamford Bridge club’s transfers himself during the summer window.

Whelan insisted Boehly must “concentrate” on Chelsea rather than “dipping his hands into other clubs”.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he’s got a lot to learn.

“Especially with his thoughts on these historic clubs and their structures.

“We’re not America. This is the biggest football league in the world, and all this talk about All-Star games really isn’t helping his cause.

“He needs to get to grips with English football and just concentrate on the job in hand at Chelsea.

“He can’t be thinking about dipping his hands into other clubs right now, let alone a club the size of Lyon.

“He’s got to get Potter’s feet under the table, he’s got to appoint a sporting director – and he’s got to get Chelsea back to where they belong.

“They’ve definitely got the players, but they’ve got to have a positive voice coming from above – rather than someone thinking about the next club they’re going to buy.”
