Todd Boehly ‘will face the consequences’ at Chelsea after bombshell

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has proved a divisive figure since he and Clearlake Capital spearheaded a takeover at Stamford Bridge in 2022.

Enzo Maresca’s side are in the fight for Champions League qualification this season but last year (2024), a supporter’s group penned an open letter to the ownership claiming the club has become a “laughing stock on and off the pitch”.

Chelsea fans have taken issue with an increase in matchday costs and complained about a lack of communication between the board and fans, while spending on transfers rockets to historic levels.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has explained why Boehly’s latest move is a “bad look” for the US billionaire.

Chelsea owner Boehly ‘will get hassle’ after explosive update

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed the American’s investment in Vivid Seats is a “bad look”.

The Times has reported (4 February) that Boehly is a director of US site Vivid Seats, which facilitates the resale of Premier League match tickets at up to £20,000.

Finance expert Stefan Borson has already told Football Insider that the investment looks “horrendous” for the Chelsea chairman from a PR perspective.

Wyness insisted Boehly likely isn’t involved in the day-to-day running of Vivid, but must be “aware of the PR issues”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It is a bad look for Boehly.

“I don’t want to criticise him too much, because it’s a business venture he’s bought into and he’s decided it’s worth the hassle he will get.

“He will get hassle about this.

“Boehly probably doesn’t run this business, it’s just a share, but nevertheless – there is a consequence, and he has to be aware of the PR issues.

“I’m sure there has been some backchanneled conversations since this story has come out, and they’ll probably be a bit more conscious about the issue.

“I don’t think he’s actually in there running the business, but it’s not a great look.”

Chelsea step up hunt for new centre-back

Football Insider revealed on Chelsea interest in Nottingham Forest star Murillo will not go away after they had a January bid rejected.

Forest rejected a club-record figure for the 22-year-old defender – who later signed a new contract at the City Ground running until 2029.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Arsenal are among the sides likely to join Chelsea in the race for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi.
