Todd Cantwell directly messages EFL after Blackburn vs Ipswich abandonment at Ewood Park

Todd Cantwell scored what should have been the match-winning penalty for Blackburn Rovers before match officials abandoned the Championship clash against Ipswich.

West Ham target and Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna was in the dugout at Ewood Park on Saturday, despite the Northern Irishman being touted as Graham Potter’s replacement.

Ipswich star Jaden Philogene could not replicate his brilliance against Sheffield United as the Tractor Boys looked certain to lose against the Rovers before the match was abandoned due to heavy rainfall.

Ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett exclusively told Football Insider that Blackburn versus Ipswich will be replayed despite new protests from Cantwell.

Todd Cantwell hopeful EFL give Blackburn Rovers massive win

Jacob Greaves received a red card early on in the second half before the former Norwich City attacker put the blue and whites into the lead from the penalty spot.

The home side looked to be heading towards a narrow victory before the referee called off the game due to heavy rain in the 80th minute.

Taking to Instagram on 20 September, the number 10 pleaded with the EFL to grant Blackburn the victory, stating: “Great performance from the team.

“Given the circumstances of the game, I really hope the EFL come to the correct and fair conclusion on our win.”

Blackburn Rovers fans to be frustrated as Ipswich Town fortunate

The Rovers just edged the Tractor Boys in the abandoned 3 pm kick-off and will feel aggrieved not to have taken the three points home.

Possession was practically evenly shared amongst the two sides, with the hosts being just that little bit more exciting on the attack.

The red card to Greaves certainly altered proceedings but Ewood Park would have been infuriated that the match couldn’t continue for 10 more minutes.

Neither team have started the 2025-26 season on fire, and a victory would have pushed Blackburn into the top half of the table.

I do feel for the travelling away fans who came to watch their club in horrific conditions without putting up much of a fight.

The abandonment will, of course, suit McKenna’s side, but there should be an expectation that fans are financially covered for making the long trip.
