Todd Cantwell responds to Blackburn’s new offer after Rangers news

Todd Cantwell has so far turned down approaches from Blackburn Rovers over the offer of a new contract and plans to assess his options.

The 27-year-old’s current deal is set to run until 2027 as things stand, but the club are determined to secure his position rather than risk losing him this summer.

However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, talks over a new deal have delayed due to their league position.

Blackburn currently sit 20th in the Championship table, just five points above the relegation zone, and will likely be forced to sell if they go down.

Cantwell is viewed as a crucial part of Michael O’Neill‘s side and will play a big role in their bid for survival, despite their worries that he could look to move on.

Todd Cantwell edges towards Blackburn Rovers exit

Blackburn are locked in talks with Cantwell over a new deal and remain hopeful he will commit his future to the club despite interest from elsewhere.

Should he opt against signing a new deal completely, the midfielder could be moved on in the summer in as it will represent Blackburn’s last chance to make money from his sale.

So far this season, Cantwell has made 20 Championship appearances, scored four goals and provided three assists and remains a key player despite missing their last two games.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “When he left Rangers to join Blackburn 20 months ago, it was under a bit of a cloud.

A lot of the fans weren’t happy with him. He had a fallout with the then manager, Philippe Clement, had submitted two transfer requests during his time at Ibrox as well.

He’s obviously got just over a year left on his contract at Blackburn.

“There’s been suggestions that they’ve been trying to tie him down to a new contract without success.

“Blackburn, right now, do need Todd Cantwell fit and firing because they’re in this relegation dogfight in the Championship and are looking to keep hold of him.

Rangers tipped to complete surprise Cantwell return

Amid ongoing speculation about Cantwell’s future at Ewood Park, a number of clubs are believed to have taken an interest, including suggestions Rangers could make a move.

However, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 20 February that Rangers are not interested in Cantwell and will not pursue a move this summer.

The 27-year-old never managed to endear himself to the supporters in Glasgow, who have retained those negative feelings, and it is unlikely he would be welcomed back.

Cantwell was far from a fans’ favourite during his time at Ibrox, where he featured 64 times, scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists.

As a result, any suggestions of a return to Ibrox have been quickly dismissed, with Rangers set to assess other options instead of the controversial midfielder.
