Newcastle striker Ivan Toney is having a medical at Wigan Athletic ahead of a loan move to the club, Football Insider sources understand.
Newcastle are willing to loan out Toney, 21, as he is well down the pecking order in Rafa Benitez’s first-teams plans ahead of the new season.
A source close to the situation has told Football Insider that a number of clubs have expressed an interest in taking Toney on loan this season, but Wigan have moved quickly to secure a deal for the former Northampton star and the terms have been agreed.
Toney had two spells out on loan at Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe last season, scoring six goals in 19 games for Shrewsbury and six goals in 15 League One appearances for the Iron.
Scunthorpe were keen on bringing Toney back to Glanford Park this summer, but Wigan have persuaded him to move to the DW Stadium after holding talks with the player.
The forward joined Newcastle in the summer of 2015 from Northampton and he made four appearances in his debut season for the then Premier League club.
Toney is highly regarded at Newcastle, but with his first-team chances set to be limited, the club feel he would be better served going out on loan again so that he can get regular first-team action under his belt.
The young attacker has impressed during pre-season for Newcastle Under-23s and Wigan see him as someone who can spearhead their challenge for promotion back to the Championship this season.
