Tony Mowbray in contention for Scottish Premiership return after latest sack news

Tony Mowbray is on the hunt for his first job back in management since his departure from West Brom late last season.

The experienced coach did not have a successful return to The Hawthorns, with a late collapse in form causing the Baggies to fall out of the playoffs, which resulted in his sacking.

Previously, Mowbray had overseen a successful spell at Sunderland, guiding them to the playoffs in his first campaign in charge.

Now, the 62-year-old is being linked to the Scottish Premiership after Aberdeen sacked Jimmy Thelin in early January.

Tony Mowbray in contention for Aberdeen job

On Monday, Thelin was sacked as Aberdeen manager after a shocking start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Despite winning the Scottish Cup last season, the Dons were unable to build on this, and currently sit eighth in the Scottish Premiership.

Ayr United manager and Celtic legend Scott Brown has been linked to the Aberdeen post in recent days.

However, Mowbray is now in contention for the job, according to the bookies.

One bookmaker has Mowbray as 10/1 for the job, making him the fourth favourite for the position.

If he were to take it, it would be the first job he has had in Scotland since his short stint at Celtic between 2009 and 2010.

Who else is in contention for the Aberdeen job?

Currently, the favourite for the Aberdeen job is Jens Berthel Askou.

At 2/1, the current Motherwell manager has had a fantastic campaign to date and is on track for European football next season, with the Steelmen currently fourth.

Following him is Stephen Robinson at 7/4. The St Mirren manager guided the Buddies to a shock Premier Sports Cup victory earlier in the season as they overcame Celtic 3-1 in the final.

Brown is still in the running for the job at 7/2, while Markus Gisdol is considered an outsider at 14/1.

The German coach was the manager of Turkish side Kayserispor, whom he left in 2025 after failing to win any of his first eight games in charge.
