Tony Xia delivers Aston Villa transfer bombshell on Twitter

By Harry Sykes

Tony Xia has admitted that Aston Villa could sell Jack Grealish in the final five days of the transfer window.

The Villa owner delivered the bombshell on Twitter on Friday morning as he replied to a supporter pleading with the club not to cash in on the 21-year-old academy product.

The Mail had earlier reported that Middlesbrough are lining up a sensational late-January move for Grealish and that the Midlands giants could be forced to cash in on the youngster to comply with financial fair play rules.

Villa spent £50million on new players last summer and have already added five signings to the ranks this month following a spate of arrivals in the last 48 hours.

Xia and chief executive Keith Wyness told fans on Thursday they were working on more deals as Steve Bruce’s breathless revamp continues, and it now appears that the overhaul could include the exit of Grealish.

Urged by a Villa supporter not to sell attacking midfielder Grealish, Xia responded on his personal Twitter account that the club hierarchy “know what we should do” and that he has “more experience running business” than most of the fans.

The Chinese millionaire also added, with a comment that will spark fears that Grealish could depart by next Tuesday’s cut-off, that big-name transfers “happened all the time if anyone is good”.

England Under-21 international Grealish is a boyhood Villa fan and star graduate of the club’s academy and was widely regarded as a great hope of English football when he burst onto the scene two seasons ago.

His career has subsequently suffered some twists and turns following a series of off-field controversies.

But Grealish has been a mainstay of the team this season after working his way back to the first team and has made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and supplying four assists.
