Tony Xia sends Aston Villa transfer update to fans on Twitter

By Will Butcher

Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has told fans to be patient as he works towards securing a number of January transfer targets, but said that they would be done before deadline day.

The Midlands giants have made just one signing this month in Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan, despite being reportedly interested in a whole host of talented stars.

Posting on his personal Twitter account, Xia told fans to “be patient” as he is confident that he will obtain the signatures of several new players “before the deadline”.

Manager Steve Bruce will want new signings at Villa Park this month as he looks to maintain his reputation as a promotion expert from the Championship.

The former Sunderland, Hull and Birmingham manager has won promotion to the Premier League four times but faces a fight to make it five with Villa currently in 13th place.

The Midlands giants remain keen in bringing a central midfielder to Villa Park this month, after The Mirror claimed on their transfer blog on Tuesday (10. 40am) that Bruce had a bid for Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane turned down.

Bruce remains interested in Nottingham Forest captain Henri Lansbury, after the Birmingham Mail claimed a £40,000-a-week deal had been drawn up for the goalscoring midfielder.

Football Insider verdict:

Villa desperately need a new spark as they’re not showing the consistency necessary to make a push towards the play-off spots. Bruce will desperately want to mould the side with players of his choice, and fans will be hoping that Xia lives up to his word and secures new signings in January. Signing the likes of Lansbury and Hourihane would add an attacking bite to the relegated Premier League side’s midfield, which currently lacks a player that can join the attack and find the back of the net.
