Top flight duo eye swoop for firm Newcastle fans' favourite - report
By Russell Edge
Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is being eyed up by both Brighton and Southampton for a possible move to the south coast, according to a report.
The Guardian claim on their website that the Serbian forward, who is a firm fans’ favourite on Tyneside as a result of his passionate performances up front, could be moved on after his lack of game time under Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez.
The 23-year-old has managed to make just three appearances across all competitions, two of which have come as substitute appearances in the top flight, although has managed to net twice so far.
He has a total of 17 goals for the Magpies in 68 appearances, and has found himself dropped to third choice striker at St James’ Park, behind Joselu and Dwight Gayle.

The situation surrounding Mitrovic is an interesting one, with Benitez seemingly unsure of what to do with the powerhouse of a forward. There is no doubt he offers something different to what the other strikers on Tyneside do, but his disciplinary record and maverick approach means he does not fit in to the Spaniard’s plans. Offloading him in January would raise some much needed funds for reinvestment, but at the same time can Newcastle really afford to be strengthening their rivals’ squads? Benitez will likely hope that a big money offer from overseas comes in, but without a replacement lined up it is unlikely he will depart, as the manager will know that even Mitrovic is better than nothing.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club have been scouting a red-hot international striker who could be Mitrovic’s replacement.
