Spanish giants Barcelona are eyeing up a swoop for Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen in the winter transfer window, according to a report.
Spanish publication Don Balon claim on their website that the La Liga side are keen on adding a playmaker to their ranks in the new year and have identified Premier League trio Eriksen, Mesut Ozil and Phillipe Coutinho named as their preferred targets.
However it is the Danish international who tops the list as a result of the 34 goals he has scored and the 44 assists he has created since 2013, a record which bests both the Liverpool and Arsenal men.
It is said that the Spanish top flight leaders have held long term interest in Eriksen and believe that he still has some way to go before reaching his full potential, despite his already impressive vision and passing abilities in the middle of the park.
He is contracted to Spurs until 2020 and has four goals and four assists in 18 appearances this season.
Football Insider verdict
It should come as no surprise that giants such as Barcelona are circling for Eriksen considering his performances over recent seasons, although he has faltered somewhat for the Lilywhites during the current campaign. He is what makes Spurs tick and they really cannot afford to lose him if they are to mount any serious challenge for the likes of the Premier League or Champions League. However, this interest may result in Eriksen’s head being turned and it may take a sizeable wage increase or some actual silverware to convince him to stay under Mauricio Pochettino. On the other hand, he may enjoy being a key player for Spurs, in comparison to potentially being only used in a rotation role at the Nou Camp.
In other Tottenham news, Pochettino has delivered a hammer blow on the club’s chances this season.
