Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has revealed that there is no inside knowledge from him or his agent when probed over a potential move to Tottenham during the summer transfer window.
Spurs have been linked by the Sun with a move for the 18-year-old powerhouse after his impressive displays for both the Dutch giants in the Eredivisie as well as for the Netherlands’ national side, for which he already has five caps.
It is said that the Lilywhites view the young talent as an ideal replacement for the potentially exit-bound Toby Alderweireld, but de Ligt himself admits he knows nothing about the north London club making a swoop in the off-season.
Probed by Fox Sports over a possible move, he said: “I do not know anything about it.
“And my agent does not know anything about it. Today I played a match with Ajax and next week we have another one.”
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham fans should not be too disheartened by the Dutch youngster’s comments, for his is hardly going to broadcast knowledge of a potential swoop to the public. He is staying loyal to Ajax with his comments, even if he does know about Spurs’ interest, and it may be that the Eredivisie side have not told him about any initial talks that have been held with Mauricio Pochettino’s club. Either way, Spurs certainly seem to be in the market for a new centre back and considering de Ligt’s rise to stardom, it is no surprise to see him linked with a move. Could he link up with former team mate Davinson Sanchez next season? Pochettino would certainly have a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence if that were the case.
