Top Rangers manager contender is ‘highly respected’ but ‘lacking’ and the wrong man
Rangers are still searching for Russell Martin’s replacement but have been urged to stay away from one candidate who wouldn’t be able to handle the job.
Martin was sacked before the international break, following an abysmal four months in charge of the Glasgow giants.
Steven Gerrard turned down the chance to rejoin Rangers, as did former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche.
Now, Danny Rohl is in contention to get the job at Ibrox, along with Kevin Muscat and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rangers should not appoint Danny Rohl
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Rohl is lacking the necessary experience for the Rangers job.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that if Martin couldn’t handle the pressure at the Glasgow giants, then the former Sheffield Wednesday manager has no chance.
Rohl was linked to the Rangers job over the summer while he was still at Wednesday, but since then, he has left the Owls.
Wyness added that if the 36-year-old got off to a bad start at Ibrox, he would have a difficult time with the Gers supporters.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think Danny Rohl is probably lacking the experience. I thought Russell Martin had the experience of working through some difficult situations, and also bringing clubs up and making them better.
“Danny Rohl is highly respected. I think he’s a talent, but I don’t think the experience is quite there. I think if Russell Martin, who’s a fiery character, can’t handle Glasgow, then Danny Rohl is going to have a tougher time as well.
“If he gets off to a poor start in his first few games, I’d hate to see poor old Danny handling that one with the Rangers faithful up there.”
Rangers linked with former West Ham boss
Slaven Bilic has been linked with the manager’s job at Rangers in recent days, and is another one who could potentially be rivalling Rohl.

The former West Ham boss, who has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Fateh in August 2024, has now emerged as a key contender.
Bilic was an option for West Ham in their attempts to replace Graham Potter, hinting that he was eager to get back into management.
However, he missed out on a surprise return to the London Stadium when they opted to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo, who controversially left Nottingham Forest earlier this season.
