Tottenham ‘absolute disaster’ update: ‘Postecoglou demoralised by transfer news’
Ange Postecoglou will be extremely unhappy with the transfer window Tottenham already and it could still end in disaster, Michael Dawson has said.
The window is set to close on Monday (3 February) Spurs have so far made just one senior signing, with 21-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky joining from Slavia Prague.
Football Insider understands Postecoglou is hoping to add two more players to his side in the window, with injuries taking a major toll on the options available to him.
Tottenham though have suffered some major blows in their attempts to make signings over the past few days.
Both Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel (The Sun) and AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori (Sky Sports) have apparently rejected the chance to join Postecoglou’s side.
Tel in paticular had been a big target for Spurs, with suggestions a £50million deal had been agreed, with chairman Daniel Levy apparently flying to Germany for negotiations with the 19-year-old.
Now Dawson believes that means this window is at risk of becoming an “absolute disaster” for the club if they are not able to turn things round quickly.
Speaking about his old club’s efforts in the current transfer market on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (1:33pm), the former England international said: “January is a hard transfer [window] to get deals done but I think it’ll be demoralising for Ange, and the fans and the club, that when they make a big attempt to sign Tel from Bayern Munich, the chairman goes over and meets him, and then he declines the club, and now you hear he’s being linked with Manchester United.”
After Simon Thomas then pointed out the Red Devils are also in a difficult position, Dawson added: “Yes, but people have to realise that as big a club as Tottenham are, the situation that they’re in, if you’re competing against a Manchester United, as a player where are you gonna go? I think this just shows.
“The one where Fikayo Tomori, which I thought would have been a good signing for where they are now, do I think he plays instead of Mickey van de Ven and Romero?
“No chance, he’s not good enough to be ahead of them, but with Dragusin getting injured you’re looking for somebody to play back-up… but that looks like it’s not going to happen.
“So it’s going to be a challenging time, it has been since the start of January, and now we’re getting into the final few days, they have to get something done. If nothing happens, with the amount of injuries that they’ve got and the situation they’re in it will be an absolute disaster for them.”
Tottenham under major pressure in window’s final days
Football Insider Verdict
Missing out on both Tel and Tomori at this point can only be seen as a major blow for everyone connected with Spurs.
It has already been a terrible season for Tottenham in terms of results on the pitch, which hasn’t been helped by struggles for fitness and form at centre-back and in attack respectively.
Signing those two players could therefore have helped to address those issues for Postecoglou’s side and so missing out on them in not going to help the mood given how important such signings could be.
Indeed, it will not be a great look for the club if those players do then go on to join other clubs in a similar position in the Premier League when the picture already feels so bleak.

That means there is going to be plenty of pressure on the likes of Levy at Tottenham to deliver the signings that Postecoglou needs for the rest of the season and beyond.
If he fails to do that then the increasing negativity being focused in the direction of the Spurs chairman – from more than just fans of the club – will surely continue to grow.
