‘Tottenham accelerate Marc Guehi move after Cristian Romero latest’

Tottenham are prepared to step up their efforts to sign Marc Guehi after qualifying for the Champions League, according to their former scout.

Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout at Man United and Blackburn and remains very well-connected at his former clubs, exclusively told Football Insider that the 24-year-old is Spurs’ top target as they aim to strengthen at the back.

Doubts about Cristian Romero’s future amid interest from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid mean they have already begun considering their options to replace him.

Football Insider revealed on 23 May that Romero is expected to leave Tottenham this summer following an injury-plagued season in North London.

Guehi is seen as the ideal option for Ange Postecoglou’s side, with his experience, leadership and consistency set to provide a calming presence at the back.

However, they are not the only interested party as Brown told Football Insider Chelsea want to sign Guehi alongside the likes of Newcastle and Liverpool.

Tottenham reignite Marc Guehi interest after £70m bid rejected

Brown told Football Insider in February that Tottenham’s interest in Guehi has lingered despite them having a £70million bid rejected in late January.

The former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the Crystal Palace captain is the best available option for Spurs.

Tottenham are very interested in Marc Guehi,” he told Football Insider.

“They’ve got a certain instability at centre-back and it’s an issue they want to deal with.

“They see Van de Ven as their top option in that position, but from what I hear they’re not quite so sure about Romero, and he could be leaving.

“Guehi doesn’t have those same question marks about his performances.

“He’s ultra-consistent, you could put your bank balance on him giving you a good display every week.

“That’s the exact type of thing Tottenham are looking for, a consistent and calming presence at the back, and he’s got the experience and leadership skills to go with that.

“They missed out on him in January, but that hasn’t put them off of a deal.

“Qualifying for the Champions League has given them a boost in that one, but they’re not the only ones having a look at him.”

Atletico Madrid plot move to sign Cristian Romero

Talk about Romero’s future has been ongoing in recent weeks amid growing interest from a number of top clubs in Europe.

Football Insider revealed that Atletico Madrid are interested in Romero and that interest is refusing to go away despite Spurs’ Champions League qualification.

Sources say Diego Simeone is a huge admirer of the centre-back and wants to bring him to Spain as part of his resurgent Atletico side.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 21 April that Tottenham will accept offers for Romero rather than Van de Ven amid interest in both defenders.
