Tottenham agree Johnny Cardoso deal with sell-on clause

Tottenham have secured a priority option to sign Johnny Cardoso from Spanish side Real Betis in their deal to sell Giovani Lo Celso.

Real Betis announced the signing of midfielder Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham Hotspur on Friday, just minutes before the La Liga summer transfer window shut.

The transfer fee for 28-year-old Lo Celso is reported to be just over £4million, with Tottenham securing a priority option on US central midfielder Johnny Cardoso as part of the deal.

Speaking to Estadio Deportivo, Real Betis President Ángel Haro confirmed that the agreement includes a two-week period next summer during which Spurs will have first refusal on signing the 22-year-old for the agreed price of £21 million.

Spurs are also reported to have negotiated a sell-on clause for Cardoso, meaning they will receive a percentage of the fee if he moves to another club.

A United States international with Brazilian heritage, Cardoso started his career with Internacional before moving to Spain and excelling at Betis.

Last season was a breakout campaign for Cardoso, making 19 appearances across all competitions, 17 of which were starts.

He’s yet to start a league game so far this season, coming off the bench in their 1-1 draw with Girona and 2-0 defeat to Champions Real Madrid respectively.

Since making his international debut at the age of 18, Cardoso has made 15 appearances and is currently with them as they prepare to play friendlies against Canada and New Zealand.

Spurs are looking to continue their spree of young signings having already secured deals for Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Wilson Odobert.
