Tottenham star makes shock revelation over reported crucial talks

By Russell Edge

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed that the club are yet to offer him a new contract despite a report that talks were set to open last December.

Sky Sports claimed at the end of last year that Spurs were looking to tie the Belgian international to a new and improved contract, following new deals for first team stars such as Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen.

However nearly 12 months on the player has made the shocking revelation that Tottenham are yet to put an offer on the table, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2019.

He insisted that he was fully committed to the club despite not having seen his wage improve in line with his fellow Spurs stars, and that he was fully focused on what was happening on the pitch rather than issues off it.

The 28-year-old said to Sky Sports: “I had a good conversation with the manager. I told him I’m focused on football, to keep my game up and help the team.

“You can see I’m happy there, and I try to help the team, and that’s the way I always play football.”

When asked if Spurs had offered him a contract, the 28-year-old told Sky Sports: “No, like I said, I am focused on football. The rest, I don’t know, we will see about that.”

This comes just a month after the defender’s agent urged Tottenham to hand him the contract he deserves or face having to sell him.

Since arriving from Atletico Madrid back in 2015, Alderweireld has made 97 appearances for Tottenham, scoring six goals.

He has seen himself play every minute of all but one of the club’s fixtures this season, finding himself on the substitute’s bench for the League Cup tie against Barnsley.

He is also an established member of the Belgium squad, with 90 caps to his name since his debut back in 2009.
