Tottenham and Chelsea dealt transfer blow as ‘unplayable’ target agrees new contract

Tottenham and Chelsea are no strangers to competing for the same players in the transfer window.

Chelsea pulled out of a deal for Xavi Simons before Tottenham swooped in for the 22-year-old, who was sold more by Thomas Frank’s project.

Spurs target Nico Paz has also been of interest to the Blues, although Real Madrid appear to be the front runners for his signature.

Unsurprisingly, Simons and Paz aren’t the only two players to have emerged on both clubs’ shortlists in recent months, with Morgan Rogers another.

Morgan Rogers agrees to sign new Aston Villa contract

During the summer, Aston Villa playmaker Rogers was linked with a move to Spurs and Chelsea, seeing the 23-year-old as the ideal number 10 for their systems.

Aston Villa were demanding £80million for Rogers, though, and that price tag was ultimately too high for either club to consider making a move.

Now, their chances of landing the England international appear to be dead in the water, as the Daily Mail revealed that Rogers is set to sign a new bumper deal at Villa Park that could see his wages exceed £100k-a-week.

Villa recently gave new contracts to John McGinn and Matty Cash, showcasing their desire to tie down their big-name players to new deals.

Whilst an improved contract for the ‘unplayable’ Rogers doesn’t rule out the possibility of him leaving, it does put Unai Emery in a stronger position when it comes to negotiating.

Rogers has rediscovered Aston Villa form

At the start of the 2025/26 campaign, Aston Villa were concerned by Rogers, as his form nosedived from the heights he reached last term.

But the former Middlesbrough man has recently shown glimpses of his talent, having assisted in wins over Fulham and Burnley while scoring in the victory against Tottenham.

Rogers was also impressive against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday (November), assisting Ian Maatsen for his strike.

Thomas Tuchel has even rewarded Rogers with another England call-up, where he’ll hope to demonstrate his talent on the international stage once more.
