Tottenham backed to sign Stefan de Vrij and teammate in January for 'next to nothing' - pundit

Tottenham should sign Stefan De Vrij and Martin Skriniar in January.

That’s according to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ January plans.

Fourth-placed Tottenham have conceded 21 Premier League goals this season, 10 more than Newcastle United, who sit one place above them in the table.

Spurs have also conceded the first goal in all of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Two of Conte’s former players have been suggested as possible transfer targets for Spurs.

De Vrij, 30, is out of contract at the end of the season, as is his teammate Skriniar, 27, and Whelan can see at least one of them joining in January.

“We have already seen this with Perisic,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“If you can get a player back who you know you can trust as well as someone who could arrive for next to nothing, it’s a no-brainer for me.

“It just makes sense. They have the experience Conte will be looking for at the moment. We know that defence needs strengthening.

“I don’t think he is happy with his fullbacks. That is something they need to look at. Look, these players, Conte knows them, they can come on the cheap, what’s not to like?

“It will strengthen their side as well because there isn’t a lot of depth in those central defensive positions. Romero and Dier have been playing very well but then you have the likes of Davinson Sanchez.

“He is hit and miss at best, you never know what you are going to get from him.

“That’s why Tottenham will be in the market for at least one centre-half.”
