Tottenham branded 'absolute circus' after new update on Conte talks - pundit

Noel Whelan has blasted the “absolute circus” at Tottenham with the club “very close” to appointing Antonio Conte as their latest manager.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Spurs should have appointed the 52-year-old “serial winner” in the summer.

Yesterday, this site broke the news of Tottenham deciding to sack Nuno Espirito Santo after just 10 Premier League matches in charge.

This morning the decision was confirmed with Tottenham already very close to appointing Nuno’s replacement.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider the club are “very confident” of naming Conte as successor to the ousted Portuguese with talks already at an advanced stage.

The north London club’s sporting director, Fabio Paratici, worked with the former Chelsea manager at Juventus and is set to offer him a lucrative three-year deal.

Whelan believes Tottenham should have caved to Conte‘s demands in the summer to avoid unnecessary scorn from supporters.

“They should’ve got him in the first place, and given him whatever he wanted,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s become an absolute circus at Tottenham. It took them ages to get a manager in, too many people were saying no to them.

“That’s not the way Tottenham fans want their club to be run.

“They should’ve got the best manager in before even going to Nuno, and he was right there in the form of Antonio Conte. It could have been so different.

“I don’t know why he didn’t want to go in the first place, to a club which have state-of-the-art facilities. All the foundations are there.

“Clearly Spurs didn’t want to give him something, and it will be interesting to see if they make that concession this time round.

“He’s a serial winner.”
