Maguire: This Levy blunder is real reason behind Tottenham trophy drought

Tottenham could have been much more successful under Daniel Levy‘s stewardship had he invested just a little more in the transfer market.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Levy celebrated his 20-year anniversary at Spurs.

Maguire has waxed lyrical about the 59-year-old chairman in the past, hailing his unparalleled skills as a negotiator and his masterful control of the wage budget.

But though Tottenham have become established top-four regulars under his yoke, Levy has seen the club win just one trophy in his reign, the League Cup in 2008.

They have come close on a number of occasions but fans will be frustrated that a slightly larger outlay could have meant a lot more on-pitch success, claims Maguire.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “He has a limited impact on events on the pitch but ultimately it is his decision in terms of the wage budget and the transfer budget.

“I think that’s the thing that frustrates Spurs fans more than anything else, that they’ve been there or thereabouts.

“But they might be thinking if only he’d been slightly more relaxed in terms of signing one or two more players, that could have converted 2nd and 3rd place finishes into 1sts. It could have converted cup progress into cup victories.”

Tottenham have the chance to end their 13-year wait for a trophy when they face Manchester City in the League Cup final in April.

They will not be able to add to their cabinet in the Europa League, however, after a shock exit at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday.

In other news, a top pundit claims Dele Alli will leave Tottenham in the summer unless Jose Mourinho goes before him.
