Frank McAvennie claims Scott Parker has the potential to be a great manager but he isn’t ready for the Tottenham job.
The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was shocked when he heard about Spurs’ interest in Parker.
Last month, Football Insider revealed Tottenham have made a behind-the-scenes approach to assess the Fulham manager’s interest in replacing Jose Mourinho.
Parker, 40, replaced Claudio Ranieri as Fulham boss in 2019 and oversaw the club’s promotion to the Premier League last season.
However, a 2-0 loss to Burnley on Monday night condemned the club to an immediate return to the second tier.
McAvennie was stunned to hear about Spurs’ interest in Parker and claimed he would be unable to keep Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son at the club.
“Parker to Tottenham? Oh god no,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“They’re not going to do that, not if they want to keep Kane and Son. I’d be very surprised if Parker gets offered that.
“I think he’s a wonderful guy. He was a good player and I think he’ll be a great manager.
“He’ll learn from getting relegated but to get a job like Tottenham, not now.
“Maybe in a few years. Not now.”
Parker made 63 appearances for Tottenham between 2011 and 2013.
He first joined Fulham as a first team coach in July 2018.
