Tottenham contract rebel may be in line for shock stay after reported Levy demands revealed

COMMENT

For Tottenham supporters, there are set to be three certainties to their lives come the summer transfer window; death, taxes and rumours about the future of Toby Alderweireld.

A new day is more likely than not going to bring new reports of what is going to happen to the 29-year-old come the end of the season, and with three-and-a-half months until the transfer window opens, the smart money seems to be on the defender departing north London as he continues to refuse to commit to a new contract.

The Telegraph have claimed that Mauricio Pochettino is willing to let him go, amid claims of French heavyweights PSG joining the hunt for his capture, and that Daniel Levy is looking for a bidding war to drive up the Belgian enforcer’s price.

However, reports from the centre back’s home country from newspaper HLN suggest that the Spurs chairman is seeking a premium price for a contract rebel set to be available for £25million come the summer of 2019, with a £44million (€50million) price tag slapped on his head.

As the Belgian newspaper’s headline reads, who would pay 50million for Alderweireld?

Quite simply, the answer would be no one, especially when the interested clubs know that they can get him for almost half the price when his transfer clause kicks in a year later.

Levy is known to be a tough negotiator and that £44million demand is unlikely to have much, if any, wiggle room for prospective parties looking to do a deal.

As such, clubs may bide their time and make the British businessman sweat over a deal, and if, as is so often the case, he refuses to compromise, then Alderweireld looks set for a shock stay at Spurs.

However, while fans might love him to stick around another year, it certainly would not be in the best interests of the club, and so Levy has a tough decision to make.
