‘Tottenham could sell Mathys Tel for £80m next year’ – new details emerge

Mathys Tel has become the first signing of the Thomas Frank era after his loan spell with Tottenham in the 2024-25 campaign.

Spurs paid a loan fee of more than £7million in January and new details now emerging suggest they have paid £30million to land him permanently.

The London club and Bayern Munich had agreed a £45million purchase option but the Bundesliga giants have lowered their asking price.

Tel, 20, hit three goals in 20 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou in the second half of last season.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Spurs could turn a quick profit on the forward.

Tottenham’s Tel deal ‘is a gamble’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Tel will be worth £80million if he can contribute 15 goals in the 2025-26 campaign.

The young forward, who had scored 16 goals in 83 Bayern appearances, can play out wide or as a central striker.

Wyness insisted Tottenham will have liked what they saw on the training ground from Tel after bringing him to the club long-term.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It is potential Spurs have paid for, because he hasn’t really done it.

“His age is great at under 21. They obviously must like what they see in terms of the training ground and Spurs believe there’s potential.

“I think from what I saw of him last year, there was great ambition, enthusiasm, and that’s really all you can ask. He does look to have a bit of talent, a bit of skill, but he’s a scrapper as well, which I liked, and I think that will do him well in the Premier League.

“You can’t expect the player to come in on loan and burn up the Premier League straight away. So I think we could see more of him with an off-season under his belt.

“He’s obviously a talent, and at that price, I think it’s worth the risk for a talent that is obviously there.

“I think if he does hit the ground running and he contributes, let’s say, 15 goals next season, he’ll be worth £70-80million.

“So it’s worth a gamble from Spurs. He’s young, he’s got the talent, so I think it’s worth a go.”

Tottenham told Semenyo price tag

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (15 June) that Tottenham have been told Bournemouth are prepared to accept offers of around £70million for Antoine Semenyo.

The Ghana international enjoyed a breakout 2024-25 campaign with Bournemouth, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists across 42 appearances in all competitions.

Semenyo has attracted interest from Spurs, as well as Man United and Newcastle.
