Kieran Maguire cites possible crypto deal amid source’s Tottenham naming rights reveal

Tottenham must think very carefully before they consider getting into bed with a cryptocurrency sponsor.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ hunt for a naming rights partner for their 62,850-seater stadium.

The North London arena, which is officially known as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, has been without a branding deal since it opened in 2019.

It is believed that Spurs could generate around £20m per season from such a deal, with the likes of Google, Amazon and Nike previously linked.

But one company that is not in the running to secure a naming rights deal is Spurs’ primary sponsor AIA, a source told Football Insider on Tuesday (31 January).

Maguire claims that Spurs are making good progress in their hunt to find a partner but should resist the temptation to negotiate with a crypto firm.

Spurs are still very confident that they are able to sign off on a deal,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

Fans still call it White Hart Lane, but they are calling it the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It is absolutely essential that whatever deal is signed is long-term because it is that first name that always sticks in the eyes of supporters.

Nobody calls Bolton’s stadium the University of Bolton Stadium, they call it the Reebok. That is reflected in the value of the naming rights.

I think Spurs are still confident that they can find a deal, although it is a more precarious market than they perhaps had a year or two ago.

That is due to the volatility of cryptocurrency and other related industries. They have to be careful if they sign off on a deal that is making people redundant. That could generate more negative than positive headlines.
