Finance guru: Super League revival on cards for Tottenham as early 2023 announcement looms

The Super League project once backed by Tottenham is by no means dead – and the European Court of Justice’s recent ruling was a “draw” between those who support the project and its opponents.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest twist in the plans to revive the controversial breakaway competition.

Spurs were one of six Premier League sides and nine in total to withdraw from the Super League almost immediately after its launch in April last year.

They have refused to confirm whether or not their stance has changed since that date.

Three European powerhouses – Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus – remain committed to the plot and have taken the fight to the European Union’s highest legal authority, the ECJ.

Advocate general Athanasios Rantos has advised the court that UEFA and FIFA should be allowed to sanction clubs for joining breakaway competitions in a preliminary ruling seen by many as a blow to the Super League.

But a statement sent to Football Insider by A22 Sports Management last Thursday (15 December) suggests that Super League organisers A22 Sports Management expect positive news when a full verdict is announced in nearly 2023.

Plumley suggests that it is not out of the question that the Super League rebels could get their way in the long run.

I think in football terms, we probably class this one as a draw at the moment,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

It’s not to say the Super League can never happen but the fear here is that FIFA and UEFA would need to sign off on it or sanction accordingly.

“We are sort of at that halfway point that I think we were expecting at this stage. I think it will be a similar announcement in the Spring.

The Super League will remain bullish. There is some work around the edges to do – I think that will be their reading of it.

The devil will be in the detail, however, and we’ll get a much clearer idea in the spring.
