Tottenham expert backs Antonio Conte’s Djed Spence decision as fans fume
Antonio Conte is doing the right thing by keeping Djed Spence out of the Tottenham matchday squads.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Spence, 22, has not been included in the matchday squad for Spurs’ last two Premier League games.
The right-back is yet to make his competitive debut for the club and some Spurs fans have taken to social media to share their concerns.
However, Wenham is not surprised by Spence’s recent omissions.
“Yeah, some fans aren’t happy but it’s not really a surprise for me,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“We have so many players who can play right wing-back. Doherty is on the bench and he is a complete right wing-back.
“Lucas can play there and did play there during pre-season. If worst comes to the worst then you could shuffle the side and Davinson Sanchez can play over there.
“We just have a lot of options at the moment and unfortunately for Djed, he is young and it will take time for him to acclimatise to the way Conte wants him to play.
“Emerson is playing really well at the moment and was excellent in the last few weeks of last season.
“Conte has made it clear that he is the first choice.”

Spence enhanced his reputation during the 2021-22 season while playing an instrumental role in Nottingham Forest’s successful promotion bid.
He made 40 league starts among 50 appearances in all competitions in 2021-22, and started all their playoff wins.
